From time to time, our Longmont dentist and staff see patients who aren’t aware that they are brushing their teeth incorrectly.   Those patients are not alone.  Many people, regardless of age, make these common mistakes.  Luckily, it doesn’t take much to correct the problems.  Our oral health needs strongly depend on good habits like proper brushing and flossing.  As the dentist Longmont residents look to for their family and cosmetic dentistry needs, we’ve got your oral health covered.  Check out below some of the common brushing mistakes people make and how to correct them.

Incorrect motion

Brushing teeth is a gentle, circular motion of the brush.  Small circles help the brush reach and clean the entire surface of the tooth and gums.  Brushing side to side, your toothbrush doesn’t get the whole tooth.  Too much pressure when brushing can cause a problem too; especially to the enamel. 

Worn out toothbrushes

The bristles on toothbrushes wear down over time.  This is why replacing the toothbrush becomes necessary.  Our Longmont dentist recommends replacing toothbrushes every 3 or 4 months.  Let us know at your next dental exam if you need one; we’d be happy to help you out. No one should forget to brush as idleness is a cavities best friend.  Make a point to brush at least two times every day and floss so that you can tooth decay and cavities.  Brush after you’ve had anything to eat or when you’ve had sugary beverages.  Most cavities are a result of tooth decay having the chance to take hold to the tooth.  By keeping your teeth clean, you’ll avoid most of these problems.


The American Dental Association and our Longmont dentist recommend brushing for at least 2 minutes each time.  Consider an electric toothbrush that is designed to time out brushing for you if it would help.  Brushing for one minute on the top and one minute on the bottom will give you the clean coverage you need.  If young family members need a little help, you can find some great apps online to assist them in brushing the recommended full two minutes.
