• Keep Your Smile Happy with These Summertime Snacks

  • If you’re like most people, you’ve vowed to get healthy around the New Year. We’re already halfway done with 2019, so you’ve probably had ample opportunities to stray from your health goals. You may have joined a new gym, bought a new pair of running shoes or yoga pants, or new water bottle with all intention of making this year committed to your health. Our Longmont dentist recommends a few summertime snacks to keep your teeth and body happy.

    Summertime Fruits and Veggies

No matter who snacks the most in your home, keeping a kitchen stocked with ripe fruits and veggies is a fantastic way to have quick and healthy snack options. Wash your fruits and vegetables and cut larger items into serving sizes. Prep snack-sized containers and keep them in an easily accessible fridge drawer so the kids can reach. Having ripe fruits on the counter is a quick fix to grabbing a snack on the go. Fruits and veggies are packed with essential vitamins that will support a strong body, good oral hygiene, and keep your tummy satisfied longer. Some of our Longmont dentist staff favorite include:

    • Cherries
    • Avocado
    • Tomatoes
    • Cucumbers
    • Bell peppers
    • Berries
    • Plums
    • Peaches
    • Snap peas
    • Melon
    • Summer squash

Fresh produce options are bountiful this time of year! Stop by your local farmers market for the best options grown nearby. By prepping your fruits and veggies ahead of time, you’ll always have a healthy option ready when you want one.

    Dairy Treats

Ice cream is often a go-to snack for lazy days at the lake. It’s alright to indulge every once in a while, but be mindful for the added calories and sugar, which can add up quickly. For days spent at the water, consider packing a cooler of treats instead of stopping by the ice cream truck. Cubes of cheese or yogurt are great healthy alternatives. Frozen yogurt pops will satisfy that craving for frozen dairy without adding much sugar.

    Healthy Dry Goods

No matter if you plan to be lakeside, stay home, or go on an epic road trip, there are plenty of other healthy options that are easy to keep on-hand. Peanuts, pistachios, and almonds are all in season, and store well. Eat them as is, or shake up your granola with some nuts Whole grain or sprouted bread is also fantastic to keep on hand for quick cucumber sandwiches or avocado toast. With these healthy options nearby, you’ll have no excuse to reach for the sugary stuff.

We look forward to summertime at our Longmont dentist office, because that’s when all the best treats come out. Popsicles at BBQs and campfires s’mores are okay every so often, but be cautious. The sugar and calories can add up quickly. Your smile and body will thank you for choosing the healthier options. If you decide to snack on the sugary snacks instead, remember to brush and floss more often to keep your mouth as happy as you are.
